BANGZILLA UNLEASHES “WAVE THEORY”, ITS FIRST PLUGIN THAT TURNS WAVEFORMS INTO MELODIES

Wave Theory is a MIDI plugin that turns waveform shapes into unexpected melodies, created in collaboration with UK instrument-makers Boxed Ear.

‍

LONDON, UK, 27 October 2026 — BangZilla, a new plugin label from The Audio Programmer, releases Wave Theory, a MIDI plugin that turns the shape of a waveform into melodies you wouldn’t have written yourself. Made with UK instrument-makers Boxed Ear, this plugin generates evolving lines that stay in key and in time, and plays through any hardware or software synth.

Feed it a wave, pick a key and scale, and let it loose on any hardware or software synth. Start from a preset or build your own pattern. Then swap the wave, sweep through its shapes, or change the timing and length of the sequencers.

"The music we make and the tools we use to create them are growing closer than ever, and we want to push that forward," says Joshua Hodge, founder of BangZilla. "Wave Theory is our first attempt to dive into something new and fun, rather than a tired repeat of the old. I'm proud of what we've created together"

‍

Melodies That Are Out Of This World

Wave Theory invites you to get your hands on the controls and follow your ears. Four independent sequencers keep your melodies moving. Play with which notes fire, add a slide, shift the accents, or sweep through the wavetable to uncover a new melodic turn. Give each sequencer its own length and speed, and hear new patterns emerge as they drift apart and meet again. Everything lives on a single screen, allowing you to stay in the flow.

‍

Key features include:

  • Waves become melodies: the shape of any of the 100-plus wavetables is turned into an evolving melody line, and you can import your own.
  • Four parallel sequencers: new movement on every pass, always under your control.
  • Always in key: a central quantizer sets the key and scale, and can follow the chords you play so Wave Theory stays with your song.
  • Sixteen memory slots: capture a variation you love and trigger saved states live from a MIDI controller.
  • Bring your own waveforms: Wave Theory reads standard wavetable files, so shapes from Serum, Vital and other wavetable synths work directly.
  • Drives anything: it sends MIDI, not audio, so it plays through every hardware and software synth in a setup, at negligible CPU..

In Collaboration with Boxed Ear

Wave Theory was made with Boxed Ear, a small UK company with a big appetite for sound and a lifelong soft spot for sequencers. Their work has appeared alongside Sequential, Akai, Isla Instruments, Bitwig, ROLI and Native Instruments.

“We like circuits that misbehave, filters with opinions, and sequencers that take the scenic route to the next note," said Rory Dow of Boxed Ear. “Wave Theory is that itch made real, step by step and wave by wave. Poke it and see what falls out."

‍

Availability

Wave Theory is available as a VST3, AU (macOS) and AAX plugin for macOS 11 or later and Windows 10 or later, as a universal binary on Apple Silicon and Intel.
